About the treatment
A tooth is removed when it’s too damaged to restore, is painfully impacted (often wisdom teeth), or is causing infection/bite crowding. After an exam and X-ray, the area is numbed with local anesthesia. Simple extractions lift the tooth out gently; surgical extractions may need a small gum opening and sectioning of the tooth. Expect pressure (not sharp pain), mild bleeding, and swelling for 24–48 hours. You’ll leave with written after-care: bite on gauze, avoid spitting/straws/smoking for 24 hours, start salt-water rinses after 24 hours, take prescribed pain relief/antibiotics if given, and eat soft foods. Most sockets begin to feel comfortable in 3–5 days and close over in 1–2 weeks; stitches (if placed) are removed or dissolve as advised. At AVMSmiles, we also discuss replacement options (implant/bridge) when appropriate and tell you when to contact us (persistent bleeding, fever, severe pain suggestive of dry socket).
